Achieve Your Goals
Muscle Gain & Performance
Ensuring your body receives a regular supply of protein is essential for supporting lean muscle growth. Protein consists of amino acids which are the building blocks of muscle and allow us to build, repair and maintain muscle tissue.
Building muscle mass essentially involves the process of lifting heavier weights, tearing the muscle fibres and then rebuilding them stronger and bigger and this is where regular protein intake comes in. Current research indicates roughly 2.2g of protein per kg of body weight is required for building muscle. For an 80kg male this equates to 176g/day which equates to roughly 30g-40g per meal spread over 5 meals.
Protein can be attained from a wide range of wholefood sources such as fish, chicken, and beef as well as non-animal sources such as quinoa, green peas and nuts. Protein can also be attained in supplement form, most commonly in powders such as whey protein powder, pea protein powder or rice protein powder. These powders allow for a convenient way to add additional protein calories into your daily diet and assist with muscle building needs.
- Faster Recovery
- Energy Boost
- Muscle Growth
Weight Loss & Toning
The lowest calorie way to consume protein is in a protein shake. Products such as Whey Protein Isolate have extremely low levels of carbs and fats, meaning the calories you consume are virtually pure protein. If you’re looking to minimise your caloric intake and burn any excess fat, a high protein diet is a must. Not only will a high protein diet ensure your body draws its energy from excess fat stores, it’ll also make sure you don’t feel hungry and crave unplanned cheat meals.
Nevertheless, we wouldn’t advise you rely on protein powder as your only source of protein. Rather it should be used to supplement a well-rounded diet.
- Supports weight management
- Low Carb Shake
- Ideal for high protein diets

FAQs
What is whey protein powder?
Protein powder is essentially a concentrated source of protein derived from either an animal or plant source. Whey protein is a high-quality, complete protein naturally found in cows' milk. To get from pasture to packet, the milk is collected from New Zealand grass-fed dairy cows and is pasteurised. Enzymes are then added to encourage coagulation, during which curds will form. Whey, the liquid component of milk, gets separated from the curds and is filtered to remove most of the fat and lactose. It is micro-filtrated to become WPC 80 and goes through a second ultra-filtration process that removes further fat and lactose to make WPI 90, resulting in a more refined whey protein. The filtered liquid whey is then evaporated and dried to become a pure whey powder, which is how it arrives at the True Protein HQ on Sydney's Northern Beaches, where we blend it with all-natural ingredients and flavours and package it on site. All of our protein powders contain a complete amino acid profile including all nine essential amino acids.
What is the difference between True's Whey Protein Isolate (WPI 90) and Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC80)?
The key difference between the two whey protein powders is refinement. Both powders go through a micro-filtration process in their raw state, but WPI 90 goes through a further ultra-filtration process that strips away lactose and other elements to give a purer whey with a higher protein content of around 90%. Please see here for further information https://www.trueprotein.com.au/isolate-concentrate-difference.
Why do I need protein powder?
Protein is an important macronutrient that can be found in a range of whole foods and supplements. Quite simply, we can't live healthily without it. Protein powder can be used to supplement a whole food diet in both men and women and there are many benefits in doing so. Taking protein powder allows you to conveniently increase your protein intake, which can help to boost athletic performance and enhance muscular recovery as well as assist with shredding or weight loss and supplement a low-protein diet. You can read more about the benefits of taking protein powder and what it is here https://www.trueprotein.com.au/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-protein.
How is WPI 90 flavoured?
We have opted to use stevia to sweeten our flavoured proteins. Stevia is derived naturally from a plant grown in South America and is around 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. We therefore only need very small quantities of this naturally produced sweetener to flavour our protein powders. Our in-house development team has pushed the boundaries of natural flavouring to develop completely unique flavours that contain no artificial ingredients or additives whilst maintaining a fantastic natural taste. Every flavour is made using 100% natural ingredients including the likes of real vanilla, freeze-dried fruits, natural cocoa, organic desiccated coconut and manuka honey.

How many protein shakes should I have per day?
True Protein recommends as a guideline 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. This recommendation is based on the assumption that your goals are to build lean muscle and enhance recovery. This translates to an 80kg person taking roughly 120g to 160g of protein per day. We recommend that you fulfill this quota through a combination of wholefoods and protein supplementation. To determine how many protein shakes you should ideally consume, you first need to assess your individual requirements and how much protein you are currently getting from whole food sources. One protein shake per day is usually adequate, or up to three servings per day as required.
When should I take my protein powder?
If using your protein alongside an exercise regime then we recommend enjoying a protein shake within an hour of finishing your workout to enhance recovery. Protein shakes can also be consumed at any time throughout the day, depending on your individual needs. See above for our guidelines on recommended daily protein intake. Our protein can also be used as an ingredient in both sweet and savoury recipes. Check out our long list of recipes here https://www.trueprotein.com.au/blog/recipes
What does the 90% protein content refer to? Why do some flavours contain less protein per serve?
90% protein content refers to the natural form of whey protein isolate as a raw material (not our Natural "flavour"). In our finished product of WPI 90, the protein content will vary depending on the input of any additional ingredients - such as natural flavours - which will slightly reduce the overall protein content. Natural flavour has the highest protein content at 89g per 100g, while the rest have a protein content ranging from 77g to 85g per 100g. Based on the nutritional information, you can make an informed choice on the protein supplement that suits you best.
Can I take protein powder when pregnant or breastfeeding?
Generally, incorporating one serve of WPI/WPC or Plant protein from a trusted brand like True Protein could be appropriate to meet dietary protein inadequacies during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are considering using a supplement you should discuss this with your Medical Doctor and/or Accredited Dietitian before proceeding. Please see here for more information. https://www.trueprotein.com.au/pages/pregnancy-supplements.
Can I use WPI 90 as a meal replacement?
We always recommend a balanced wholefood diet before adding supplements. A balanced main meal made up of wholefoods should provide protein plus other ingredients like complex carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. We recommend using a protein shake as a high protein snack in addition to your meals.
Will taking WPI 90 help me lose weight?
Whey protein powder can be used to supplement a healthy diet for weight loss. Creating an overall energy deficit through exercise and eating a good balance of whole food groups is key for anyone looking to lose weight - unfortunately protein shakes alone don't contain any magic weight loss remedies, sorry! Despite the various claims from other companies, these pills and powders don't exist! However, taking protein shakes alongside a healthy diet can aid weight loss. Protein shakes can help fend off food cravings as they keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer. With no added sugar, nothing artificial, no fillers and trace amounts of fat and carbs, WPI 90 is healthy for you and comes in at under 120 calories per shake when mixed with water.
Are samples available of this product?
We have individual samples, as well as a 10-pack sample box available of our WPI 90.
Why have you chosen New Zealand-sourced whey for your protein powders?
New Zealand protein is widely regarded as the best available in the market, and superior to Australian and North American equivalents. The livestock processes are of a much higher standard and involve the cattle being exclusively grass-fed and exempt from hormone use. Bottom line, this leads to a higher quality raw material with exceptional mixability and taste in the finished product.
Can I cook with WPI 90?
Yes! Our WPI 90 protein powder can be used in a range of raw/cold recipes including protein balls, chia puddings, in your morning oats, smoothies and much more. You can find plenty of recipe inspiration in our True Life hub here https://www.trueprotein.com.au/blog.
Can I add WPI 90 to hot drinks or warm oats?
We do not recommend adding our whey-based products straight into hot liquids as the powder may curdle. First mix the powder with room temperature water and then add to your hot beverage/oats.
Additional FAQs
Is whey protein isolate suitable for lactose intolerant people?
There is only a trace amount of lactose in our WPI 90 protein powder due to the ultra-filtration process it goes through to remove the lactose. You may be able to consume it if you are lactose intolerant or lactose sensitive but should seek advice from your doctor if you are concerned.
Can children and/or teenagers take protein powder supplements?
Unless advised by their doctor or dietitian, children and young teenagers are not advised to have protein powder as a sports supplement. There are many nutritional supplements that contain protein powder like milk, whey or soy, however, these supplements are used for medical purposes. Our protein powders are not to be used as an alternative to infant formula. Some adolescents are highly active or competitive athletes and may be keen to use sports supplements. However, adolescent athletes will see greater performance enhancements by following a well-designed training program with a balanced nutrition regimen that supports their training demands as well as natural growth development and maturation. Proper nutrition and training principles form the foundations for any successful athlete, so address any issue here first. True WPI 90 can then be incorporated into an adolescent athlete’s diet if their parents, coach and appropriate medical professional has approved and recommended it.
