FAQs

Reviewed by our Nutrition Team

Adequate consumption and production of collagen are recognised by scientists and nutritionists as key ingredients in healthy skin, joints and gut. It’s responsible for many bodily functions such as skin elasticity and maintaining bone strength. Adding a collagen protein powder to your diet could offer a range of health benefits.

What is collagen protein powder?

Collagen is the most abundant compound of protein found in our bodies and acts as a sort of ‘scaffold’ to provide strength and structure. It can be found in our joints, ligaments and muscles and makes up the bulk of the structure in our skin and internal tissues. Hydrolysed Collagen Protein is a special protein for supporting mobile joints and cartilage. Check out our blog on all there is to know about collagen powder.

Can collagen protein powder be taken for both men and women?

Yes, collagen is suitable for both men and women. This is a common misconception as it is believed collagen is taken for beauty benefits to the hair, skin and nails. However, it can be used by anyone to strengthen and support the musculoskeletal system, skin, ligaments and muscles.

What’s the difference between regular protein and collagen protein powder?

While whey protein is a complete protein source (containing all nine essential amino acids) derived from cows’ milk, collagen protein is sourced from bovine compounds such as ligaments and hide. While collagen is slightly higher in protein content than whey, it has a lower amino acid content and therefore may be slightly less effective than whey for muscle protein synthesis. We recommend taking collagen in addition to our whey protein to ensure you get the complete amino acid profile.

Should I use collagen protein for muscle bulking or lean muscle growth?

While collagen is slightly higher in protein content than whey, it does not have a complete amino acid profile and therefore may be slightly less effective than whey for muscle protein synthesis. Therefore, we recommend it as a secondary protein for these purposes. Try stacking it with our WPI90, WPC80 or All-In-One blends for bulking or lean muscle growth.

Other than protein, what are the other benefits of collagen protein?

Collagen encourages healthy cell reproduction, which promotes a wealth of health benefits. This can include supporting muscle repair and recovery, improving skin elasticity, strengthening bones, building muscle mass, improving circulation and blood flow, repairing skin damage and wounds, and strengthening hair, skin and nails. As well as our collagen protein powder, True also has a range of healthy snacks that include collagen as an ingredient. True our high protein Mousse or Hot Chocolate for delicious tasty treats that offer a range of health benefits.

Is collagen protein suitable for vegans, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets?

True Collagen is gluten-free and dairy-free as it does not contain lactose. However, it is not vegetarian or vegan as it is sourced from bovine compounds. Eating products sourced from animals provides the highest concentration of collagen. This is because, just as humans do, animals have collagen in their connective tissues.
