Recovery supplements make more sense once you stop asking which one is best and start asking what each one is for. Below is what the products in True Protein's Recovery range actually do, how much to take, and where each one fits in a week of training.
Recovery is the set of processes that return your body to baseline, and ideally past it, after training. Four of those processes are worth understanding, because each one responds to something different:
A supplement is only useful if it addresses a gap in one of these. That framing does most of the work in deciding what to buy.
They do, when the product matches the job you need done. That's the whole trick, recovery isn't a single process, so no one supplement covers all of it. Each product in this guide does one specific thing:
Match the product to the job and the category gets much simpler. A useful filter when you're comparing brands: if you can't tell what a formula is meant to do or find any research behind its headline ingredient, you're paying for the label rather than the effect.
This is where most people under-think it. The number worth understanding isn't the one on the back of a cereal box.
Australia's protein reference values are set to prevent deficiency — a floor, not a target. For an adult under 65, the Estimated Average Requirement sits at 52g a day for men and 37g for women. That's the amount that stops something going wrong. It was never designed to support muscle repair, training adaptation, or holding onto lean mass as you age.
Two things follow from that.
Requirements rise as you get older, and intake often doesn't. The same ABS analysis puts the requirement for adults over 75 at 65g a day for men and 46g for women — meaningfully higher than for younger adults, because maintaining muscle takes more protein than building it did. That group is also the most likely to fall short, with 14.7% of men and 6.2% of women over 75 not meeting requirements. Protein isn't only a training supplement.
Training pushes the target higher again. A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine pooled 49 randomised controlled trials and 1,863 participants, and found that protein supplementation meaningfully improved gains in strength and fat-free mass during resistance training, with the dose-response curve flattening at around 1.62g of total protein per kilogram of body weight per day (95% CI 1.03–2.20).
For an 80kg person, that's roughly 130g of protein daily — more than double the reference floor, and well above what most people reach without planning for it. The distance between "not deficient" and "recovering well" is the entire reason protein supplements exist.
It's also worth knowing that hitting a protein target isn't only about total grams. Over one in ten Australians get too little of their daily energy from protein relative to carbohydrate and fat, which is a different problem to deficiency and one a shake solves neatly.
The differences between protein types are real but smaller than the marketing suggests. Absorption speed is the main variable.

It does, and the mechanism is well understood. Sleep is a long fast — typically seven to nine hours without amino acids entering the bloodstream, during which muscle protein breakdown continues. Research published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that casein protein consumed before sleep was digested and absorbed overnight, raising circulating amino acid levels and increasing overnight muscle protein synthesis rates after an evening training session.
Casein is the slower-digesting of the two milk proteins. It forms a gel in the stomach, which slows the release of amino acids rather than delivering them in a single spike.
Night 85 is built for this specific window. It's a milk protein concentrate from New Zealand milk in an 80:20 casein-to-whey ratio, delivering 22g of protein per 30g serve with an amino acid release profile spread across roughly six to eight hours. It's also low in fat (1.5%) and carbohydrate (3.9%), which matters when you're drinking something 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Each serve provides 367mg of calcium — worth noting given the same ABS release found 63.7% of Australians don't meet their calcium requirements from food and drink.
Both, and it's the most thoroughly researched supplement in sports nutrition. The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand describes creatine monohydrate as the most effective nutritional supplement available for increasing high-intensity exercise capacity and lean body mass during training and notes it is safe for long-term use in healthy people.
Creatine helps regenerate ATP, the molecule your cells use for immediate energy. Beyond performance, the research also points to reduced markers of muscle damage and faster recovery of force output after intense training — which is the recovery argument.
