3 ways to use acai berry for an antioxidant boost

Acai berry is the latest rock star in the superfoods band, everyone is talking about it. Just so we can all talk about it correctly it is pronounced Ah-sigh-EE.

But why is everyone talking about it? Well it is extremely rich in antioxidants, good monounsaturated fats, Omega 3 fats, carbohydrates, Calcium, Vitamin A, Iron and Fibre. KAPOW! How’s that for a hit of goodness? But it’s what it doesn’t have much of, that gets people really talking and that’s sugar.

Acai berries come from the acai palm which is found in Central and South American Amazonian regions. The acai berries we use in our True Organic Acai Berry is sourced in Columbia. It is freeze dried within 24hrs of being harvested to preserve its goodness, has a chocolate-y berry flavour and is a deep purple colour.

So the burning question is what to add acai berry powder to, in order to get your superfood fix. There are a number of ways you can incorporate it into your diet, here are some ideas.

Mix acai berry powder into your protein shake

We've tried it with all of our premium NZ whey protein flavours, here's what we thought.

Acai with Rich Chocolate True Whey Protein

As the acai has a chocolate-y, earthy flavour it works really well with the Rich Chocolate flavour. It’s also enhanced by adding True Organic Coconut Water Powder too.

Acai with Iced Chai True Whey Protein

The acai doesn’t take away from the awesome Iced Chai flavour so a great way to slip in the superfood hit without really knowing about it.

Acai with French Vanilla True Whey Protein

This had the office in a spin when we first tried it. It really makes the vanilla flavour pop.

Acai with Strawberries & Cream True Whey Protein

The strawberries & cream flavour remains the most obvious flavour in this combination, really nice drink.

Make an Acai Smoothie Bowl

An Acai Smoothie Bowl is basically a really thick, nutritious smoothie with yummy toppings for texture.  You can adjust the ingredients as you like, but here’s a guide that works for us.

To make the bowl:

  • 2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • Handful of baby spinach leaves (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon True Organic Acai Berry
  • 2 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 30g scoop of True Whey Protein (any flavour will work)
  • 1 cup coconut water or almond milk

Toppings (these are some ideas, you can pick or choose your favourites!):

  • Fresh berries
  • Sprinkle of seeds and nuts
  • Flaked or shredded coconut
  • Cacao nibs
  • Granola

Combine the smoothie bowl ingredients in a high powered blender and blend until smooth and creamy.  Add a little more or less milk/water depending on the consistency you like.

Pour into a bowl that has been in the freezer, then add whatever toppings you choose.

Acai Smoothie

If you're short of time or need to make a portable breakfast you can have in the car or on the train on the way to work, then a smoothie is just for you.

This smoothie has a fantastic antioxidant boost and will keep you going until lunchtime.

You can also add acai to your smoothies or sprinkle it over a bowl of cereal, yoghurt or even fruit.  However you choose to eat it, you really will be getting a superfood hit!
