MCT, or Medium-chain Triglycerides, is a type of saturated fatty acid derived from coconuts. However, it differs from standard coconut oil as coconut oil contains multiple strains of fats, whereas MCT oil contains only MCTs. MCTs make up approximately 62% of the fatty acids found in coconut oil while MCT oil is a concentrated form of purely MCTs, so the main difference between the two products is the concentration.
MCT oil is a highly concentrated source of MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides). It is man-made by extracting MCTs from coconut oil through a process called fractionation. During this process two naturally derived fatty acids: C8 (caprylic – to convert into ketones more efficiently) and C10 (capric – best for endurance and mental performance) are extracted and separated from the rest of the fats.
MCT oil is beneficial for naturally fuelling your workout. MCTs contain between six and 12 carbon chains, a shorter chain than many other fat sources which helps the body to absorb them more rapidly for an immediate source of energy, instead of storing them as fat in the body. Not requiring enzymes and bile to be digested, MCTs are absorbed directly through the gut and are sent straight to the liver where they are converted to keto bodies utilised for energy without the need to be broken down, making MCT oil a product popular for use on the keto diet. MCT oil can also be used to aid fat loss through efficient fat metabolism.
MCT oil in liquid form is perfect for adding to other liquids, especially as it has a neutral flavour. Try adding it to your tea, coffee, smoothies or even your post-workout protein shake. You can also use MCT oil in recipes including our Coffee MCT Smoothie https://www.trueprotein.com.au/blog/coffee-mct-smoothie) and MCT Almond Butter Cups (https://www.trueprotein.com.au/blog/mct-almond-butter-cups), as well as salad dressings, baking and even stirred into your morning oats.

Yes, MCT oil can aid weight loss if consumed as part of a healthy diet or weight loss regime. MCTs are the simplest fatty acids for your body to break down and burn off for calories. The easily digestible fats are quickly turned into energy, absorbed directly from the gut into the liver and metabolised for fuel instead of being stored as fat. However, MCT oil should replace other less desirable sources of fat in the diet so a calorie deficit required for weight loss is achieved.
As with most supplements, taking an incorrect dosage or consuming more frequently than suggested can cause unwanted side effects including digestive irritation. Seek individualised advice from a medical professional before taking True MCT Oil if you have any medical conditions or concerns.
It’s easy, simply stir in a teaspoon of oil into the boiling water. Unlike most edible oils, MCT oil is tasteless, so it shouldn’t alter the flavour of your drink. Due to the small size of the carbon molecules in MCT oil it increases its solubility in water, however, you will notice some separation, but it makes little to no difference to the consistency of the liquid it’s mixed with, providing the correct quantity is used.
A ketogenic diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet with a low to moderate protein intake. It’s designed to shift your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis, during which ketones are produced and utilised by the body as an alternative energy source to glucose from carbs. Reducing your intake of foods such as pasta, rice, grains and bread – you’re usually limited to around 50g or less of carbs per day, the body instead resorts to using fats as its main source of fuel, hence why the diet is often promoted for weight loss. However, there is much more to the diet than simply cutting carbs, so to find out everything you need to know, click here
MCT oil as a nutrition supplement for general health and sports performance is an emerging area and so, there is conflicting scientific research regarding the list of benefits. It’s important to remember with all supplements that there is no magic pill or powder that will address your every concern. Supplements are intended to be used as exactly that, to supplement a well-balanced diet and exercise regime that is individualised to your circumstances.
