Going to the Crossfit Games - CrossFit Schwartz Melbourne

By Gemma
3 July 2015

CrossFit Schwartz, located in Melbourne, have sent teams to the Games before but that doesn’t make this year any less exciting. With a very close and united team and a remarkable effort finishing 1st in the Pacific Regionals, they are in with a very good chance going up against the best in the world. The team are heading over to the Games a few weeks early to train, train, train and have some fun, so we caught up with them before they headed off to ask them a few questions.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? Since 2011

What is your biggest achievement so far? Qualifying for individual regionals in 2014 and making the team for the Games.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No, this will be my first time.

Describe your overall nutrition. I eat fairly clean – about 95% Paleo. I’m sponsored by Natural Wholefoods who provide all my meals for me.

What role do supplements play for you? A big role. I struggle to eat in the morning so I’ll always have a protein shake and a tablespoon of natural peanut butter in the mornings. I also use the pre-workout (True Pre), Endurance and BCAAs a lot. When you are training 4 – 6 hours a day there is not always time to eat so supplements play a massive role for me.

What is your go-to supplement? BCAAs. I sip on them throughout the day.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? Hoping to achieve podium and just doing the best I possibly can. And I’m looking forward to getting over there and training, chilling out and having fun – living the dream!

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? 6 years

What is your biggest achievement so far? Being part of a winning team at Regionals twice in 2013 and 2015, and competing in the 2013 Games.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? Yes in 2013. Our team came 14th.

Describe your overall nutrition. It’s definitely a case of fuel to perform. I eat as much of and whatever I feel my body needs to perform. Recovery always comes first and the best way to do that is through nutrition.

What role do supplements play for you? They are very handy. When you are spending long days in the gym training it’s very convenient having something on hand. I have the True Post twice a day with Glutamine, The True Endurance and aminos together and also the pre-workout when I feel I need it.

What is your go-to supplement? Definitely the True Post. It’s the most convenient and gives you the best bang for your buck.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? Podium is the ultimate goal. The first time I went to the games was overwhelming but eye-opening so I’m hoping to take that I experience I gained and use it to the advantage of our team this time around.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? About 2 ½ years. When I retired from swimming in 2012 I got into CrossFit.

What is your biggest achievement so far? Winning at Regionals and qualifying for the Games this year.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No. This is the first year.

Describe your overall nutrition. It would be about 80% Paleo and 20% whatever is around. I always have a cooked breakfast, then eat Natural Wholefoods meals for lunch and my girlfriend usually cooks me some kind of meat and vegetables for dinner after the gym. Throughout the day I also drink coconut water and snack on nuts and seeds. A cheat meal for me would be having chips with my steak at the pub instead of salad.

What role do supplements play for you? A big role. For me, training twice a day in the mornings and at night my window for recovery isn’t as long as for some others. Coming from my swimming background I know the importance of recovery and so I need to make the most out of my recovery time during sleep. It’s also really convenient having all the supplements right there to have throughout the day. I’ve always got a clean shaker in my bag ready to go and make supplements a part of my routine which helps to make the recovery process better. I’ll have pre-workout, post-workout, Glutamine and Ajinomoto BCAAs every day.

What is your go-to supplement? The pre-workout (True Pre). It doesn’t make me jittery or too wired but just gives me a bit of a boost before a workout and makes me more focused. It is a lot cleaner and nicer than any others I have used before.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? As a team we would love to come in the top 5. We came 5th in the world in Regionals so to either maintain that position or bump it up would be ideal. I know a lot of the teams have changed but I feel we have a good chance to achieve this. I’m really looking forward to going out there and competing with my mates and having a good time while we execute the plan we’ve had in mind.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? Since October 2010

What is your biggest achievement so far? Getting a 60kg snatch. And in terms of competing – qualifying for the Games for the 3rd time this year.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? Yes, this will be my third time competing as a team at the Games. I went in 2012 and 2013.

Describe your overall nutrition. Well balanced. I’m not Paleo but am pretty healthy and try to stick to that majority of the time – but I do love chocolate in any shape or form!

What role do supplements play for you? Not a huge role but I do use BCAAs daily for recovery and Glutamine and B vitamins for my immune system. I also use Magnesium.

What is your go-to supplement? BCAAs. And also a good vitamin blend with B vitamins and Magnesium.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? I’m really looking forward to competing with this team. They are the most united team we have ever taken to America. I think because we are so united and confident we are in with a really good chance which is exciting. Podium would obviously be the absolute dream! I’m just excited for the whole experience – to get out of Melbourne and the cold, get a suntan, train and have some fun with the team.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? Coming up to 5 years

What is your biggest achievement so far? Qualifying with Schwartz for the Games.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No, I have competed at Regionals as an individual twice but it will be my first time at the Games.

Describe your overall nutrition. My priority is getting calories in. I’m not really structured I just eat when I feel hungry and eat enough until I feel full. But I try to eat pretty healthily.

What role do supplements play for you? Up until this year I didn’t take any supplements – for no particular reason other than I didn’t know enough about them. But since starting with True Protein I have noticed a huge difference in my energy levels and recovery. I usually use the WPI and the True Post after I finish a workout.

What is your go-to supplement? Magnesium

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? Being over there with this particular team – there are some really great people on the team so I’m sure we will have a lot of fun no matter what happens. I’d love for us to be standing on the podium, but even if we can just each do our best and see what happens when we do that.

What is your biggest achievement so far? Making the team for the Games.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No. This is my first time.

Describe your overall nutrition. I’m sponsored by Natural Wholefoods who provide me with all my meals and snacks which is pretty much all Paleo and very healthy.

What role do supplements play for you? Not a major part but I still think they are really important. I always have a protein shake in the morning as I don’t want to train on an empty stomach.

What is your go-to supplement? Whey Protein. I also use Fish Oil and Magnesium daily.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? I’m looking forward to being a part of the Games and competing with my team. In terms of achievement I just want to contribute to the team the best I can.
