Going to the Crossfit Games - Crossfit Rocks

CrossFit Rocks

CrossFit Rocks from Brisbane are still on a high after finishing third at the Regionals – an impressive result as it was their first year of qualifying as a team and they qualified in 15th position. Now to top it off they are heading to the Games! Since the Regionals, Head coach Doug Armstrong has had them training hard as a team one night a week and at a few weekend training camps, then whenever time permits they fit in their individual workouts. We managed to catch the CrossFit Rocks crew just before they flew out to LA.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? Nearly four years. I’ve trained in NZ and the States and now I’ve been with Rocks for a year.

What is your biggest achievement so far? Definitely qualifying for the Games.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No. It was my second Regionals this year but first time competing at the Games.

Describe your overall nutrition. I generally eat a balanced, healthy diet. My diet is pretty simple. I did try The Zone this year as well.

What role do supplements play for you?  I feel you can get almost everything you need from whole foods, so supplements only play a small role. I supplement with protein sometimes (True Premium Whey Isolate) and also take fish oil and a multi vitamin.

What is your go-to supplement? I’d probably say fish oil.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? We’ve worked hard as a team so it will be amazing just to be there and give it everything we’ve got. I’ve been a spectator and also worked at the Games a few times before so I’m looking forward to experiencing it from the competitor’s side.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? I’ve been at CrossFit Rocks for 3.5 years.

What is your biggest achievement so far? Making it to the Regionals and then qualifying for the Games – I’d call it more of a team achievement though.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No. I hadn’t even been to the Regionals before.

Describe your overall nutrition. I start the day early with my coaching so at 5am I have a banana and protein shake (True Whey Protein) to start the day. Around 8am I’ll have a slow cooker meal like meat and veg for breakfast. Mid-morning I’ll sometimes have more meat and veg and rice or if I’m short on time I’ll have another protein shake (True Whey Protein) and fruit. Mid-afternoon I’ll have another protein-based meal like chicken stew and rice and then at night when we have a break I’ll have another protein shake with banana. My evening meal is usually protein and vegies - something simple like a BBQ.

What role do supplements play for you? The protein shakes are really convenient as a meal replacement when I’m on the run and can’t always grab a cooked meal. I also take zinc and magnesium to help with sleep and relaxation.

What is your go-to supplement? Definitely the True Whey Protein shakes.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games?

I’ll be happy if we just take it all in and get as much out of it as possible and become better athletes. I’m really looking forward to the whole experience. I already had a ticket booked as a spectator, so it’s fantastic to now be going as a competitor!

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? Eleven months.

What is your biggest achievement so far? Being part of a team qualifying for the Games!

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No. I hadn’t even joined CrossFit when the last Games were on.

Describe your overall nutrition. I don’t have any specific meal plan. I generally just eat wholefoods and try to cook my own meals whenever I can.

What role do supplements play for you? I’ve never taken supplements as part of my diet. I have tried the True Whey Protein a couple of times and I also made some protein balls with the True Whey, which were pretty nice.

What is your go-to supplement? I don’t have one!

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games?

I just hope we go as well as we can and have fun along the way.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? Twelve months

What is your biggest achievement so far? That would have to be making it to the Games.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No. This is my first year for Regionals and the Games.

Describe your overall nutrition. I don’t follow any strict regime but I eat clean most of the time. I basically just eat whatever I need to fuel my body.

What role do supplements play for you? The True Protein supplements are the first ones I’ve ever tried. I use the Pre (True Pre) every day before a workout and the Post (True Post) if I’m feeling exhausted, or had a huge training session. I also take fish oil regularly.

What is your go-to supplement?  True Pre – Apple/Coconut flavour

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games?

We are all going there with the aim of having fun. It’s our debut year so we aren’t expecting huge achievements – we just hope to gain a lot from the experience. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the big names in CrossFit competing.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? 2.5 years

What is your biggest achievement so far? Making it to the Regionals and then the Games. We didn’t expect it!

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No

Describe your overall nutrition. I would say my diet is around 80% healthy and 20% easy. I cook mostly Paleo but I’m not too strict about it. I’ll have bacon and eggs for breakfast, meat and rice at lunch and something similar for dinner. On the weekends I’ll have a couple of easy meals and I like a bit of chocolate occasionally.

What role do supplements play for you? I take the True Instantised BCAA and True Post after a workout.

What is your go-to supplement? True Whey Protein

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games?

The goal will be to be competitive with everyone else out there. I’m looking forward to the overall experience, the atmosphere and being out there with the best in the world.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? I started CrossFit on the 21st of July 2012 - the day we check in at the CF Games will be exactly three years!

What is your biggest achievement so far? I would say my first ever Muscle Up in 2013, then qualifying for individual Regionals in 2014 and then biggest of all -making it to the Games with my Team 'CrossFit Rocks' 2015

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No, this is my first time.

Describe your overall nutrition. I have a pretty balanced diet, I like to eat healthy and clean with the occasional sweet treat. I don’t really have to think about food preparation to know that I’m going to make the right choices when it comes time to fuel my body. I’ve recently given up caffeine/coffee out of my daily routine and I’ve noticed a massive difference in my choice of snacks throughout the day. But I don’t kick myself if I have the occasional cookie or muffin. I work and train hard so I deserve it!

What role do supplements play for you?  This year I have really started to take note of what role supplements play in fuelling my training and assisting my recovery. I use True Pre pre-workout and I’ve recently added BCAA’s (True Ajinomoto BCAA) and Glutamine to maintain a healthy immune system and assist with recovery – I make them into a banana smoothie if I come straight home from training. I also take fish oil and magnesium every night without fail.

What is your go-to supplement?  True Pre (without caffeine) and magnesium at night.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games?
My personal goal is to just give my all for the team, it’s been a massive journey and I don’t want to let them down because they are such an awesome group of people. As a team we haven’t set any expectations, we are just so pumped to have been given this opportunity. The best thing is going to be walking out onto the competition floor next to some of the biggest names in the business and then finding my husband and daughter in the crowd and blowing them a kiss!
