CrossFit Active

CrossFit Active are right on track to face some hot competition at the Games in the coming weeks. This year they have three individuals and one team heading over to challenge the best in the world! So motivation is high and the team is hard at work focussing on maintenance training 2-3 times a week and spend their remaining workout time fine-tuning individual areas needing work. We caught up with them before they head off to LA.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate?  3 years

What is your biggest achievement so far? Definitely making it to the Games!

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No, this is the first time.

Describe your overall nutrition. My meals are along the lines of Paleo – I make sure I eat well at least 70% of the time with plenty of protein. I will admit I do love the occasional sugar snack though - like icecream or nutella!

What role do supplements play for you? They play an important role. I’m not a big pre-workout fan but an Intra is essential to keep my energy up and my blood sugar balanced and I’m also a big Post (True Post) drinker. True Oats and Whey are a definite favourite and I’m big on vitamins especially magnesium, zinc and calcium.

What is your go-to supplement? Chocolate flavour True Post and also magnesium.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? My goal is to do the best we can and win a few heats. I’m really excited about being surrounded by the best in the world and learning from them - and just the overall experience.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? Pretty much exactly 3 years.

What is your biggest achievement so far? It would definitely be making it to the games.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No

Describe your overall nutrition. I follow a performance dietician’s program pretty strictly. I eat clean most of the time – plenty of lean meat, some carbs, rice and plenty of fruit and vegetables.

What role do supplements play for you? They play a significant role. I use Post (True Post) every day and I use Whey Protein for recovery, even the day after a workout. I use True Whey Protein Concentrate 4-5 times a week.

What is your go-to supplement? Magnesium. It’s important for sleep and recovery.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? I’m looking forward to competing against the best in the world and seeing how we stack up next to them!

What is your biggest achievement so far? Qualifying for the Games

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No

Describe your overall nutrition. I largely stick to clean eating and follow a Paleo diet 70% of the time. I went to a nutritionist for assistance in reaching my optimum calorie intake.

What role do supplements play for you? They play a pretty big role. I train twice a day so BCAAs and protein shakes (True Whey Protein) are really important. I also take magnesium, iron, zinc, fish oil and vitamin D.

What is your go-to supplement? I’d have to say magnesium.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? The whole experience! The vibe, the workouts and the crowd.

What is your biggest achievement so far? Qualifying for the Games. I competed at my first Regionals last year, so it’s amazing to be going to the Games now.

Have you competed at the CrossFit Games before? No

Describe your overall nutrition. I don’t follow any particular nutritional plan. My sister does the cooking, so I eat whatever she dishes up! It’s often meat and vegies cooked on the BBQ. I don’t particularly eliminate any foods. I tried Paleo for a while but it didn’t work for me.

What role do supplements play for you? I don’t really take any – only iron tablets.

What is your go-to supplement? Iron tablets and chocolate!

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? I can’t wait to be there and see it all. The atmosphere will be amazing. From what I’ve heard everything is just bigger and better than the Regionals.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? 3.5 years

What is your biggest achievement so far? I’d have to say qualifying for the Games last year and coming 6th in the team comp.

How often have you competed at the CrossFit Games? Last year was the first time.

Describe your overall nutrition. I eat clean and have one cheat day a week. I avoid processed grains and fast food and prepare most of my meals myself.

What role do supplements play for you? I don’t use them all the time – generally only when I’m volume training. We’ve ramped up training at the moment so I have a high protein (True Whey Protein) shake around midday and after a workout I’ll have a Post (True Post) shake. I notice the Post makes a big difference when I’m doing high volume workouts.

What is your go-to supplement? Fish oil is important for my joints. And I take a zinc and magnesium mix before bed to relax me.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? I just want to put everything out there on the field and do our best. I’m looking forward to the whole vibe, the camaraderie and the experience.

How long have you been training with a CrossFit Affiliate? 4.5 years

What is your biggest achievement so far? It would have to be the first time I went to the Games. It was the first time CrossFit Active had sent a team, so that was fantastic to be involved in.

How often have you competed at the CrossFit Games? This is my second Games. I went to LA in 2013.

Describe your overall nutrition. I eat a healthy diet but I don’t particularly exclude anything. I eat lots of fruit and vegetables but I’m not a big meat eater. I seem to operate best on lots of vegies and a small amount of meat and I don’t exclude grains.

What role do supplements play for you? I’m not a huge supplement user but I always take Post (True Post) after a session. I take it 5-10 minutes after training and then take extra around competition time.

What is your go-to supplement? True Post – Rich Chocolate flavour.

What are you hoping to achieve and most looking forward to at the Games? I’m hoping we’ll perform to our potential as a team, with no big mistakes. If we give it our all I’ll be satisfied. I’m looking forward to going back this time knowing what to expect. It takes the anxiety of the unknown away so I’ll be able to enjoy the whole experience a lot more.
